Prehistory Study: Stonehenge

Among all the ancient stone monuments in the world, Stonehenge is one of the most magnificent and perhaps the most mysterious.

Situated on the grassy plain in southern England, it consists of a ring of huge stones, some of them weighing 50 tons or more, perched on vertical supporting stones of equal size rising almost 13 feet above the ground.

These stones were moves to their present site from quarries 20 miles away in an effort that began some 4,000 years ago and may have taken 1,200 years or more to complete.

It is somewhat surprising that a project that involved as many people for as long a period was not described in legends or painting so that today we still do not know for sure what it is was build or how it was used.

A strange thing about Stonehenge is that, unlike other large temple, it was not surrounded by dwelling settlement of people – as it must have been - then it must have had special significance to be off limits for residential purpose.
