Chronologically, the baroque is taken to span from between 1580 and 1600 to between 1725 and 1750, initially describing a period of architecture’s history before expanding to a broader complex of a ‘baroque music, baroque literature, baroque philosophy, baroque science’ each with its own chronological characteristics.
What is baroque? The term was originally coined to disparage the style it designates. It meant ‘irregular, contorted, grotesque’. And this connotation prevailed when the term became used as a label for a specific historical period in art or in literature.
The Baroque cannot be easily classified. It was a time full of contradictions and paradoxes, not unlike the present. It has been claimed that the Baroque style expresses the spirit o the Counter Reformation.
