It have been see, that in societies where infant mortality is high and survival goal is hard to achieve, parent keep their infants close 24 hours a day to protect them. In some of these societies, babies not even named until they seem to survive.
These practices are not necessary in any society where infant mortality is low. As parent attempt to achieve the economic goal of parenting they emphasize the values and skills that are most necessary to make a living in their society.
In societies with agricultural or pastoral economy, parents stressed cooperation and obedience raising their children because their agricultural activities demanded family team work.
By contrast, hunting, trapping, and fishing societies (groups that do not accumulate food) stressed quite different values; independence, assertiveness, self-reliance and other traits important in hunting.
