There are two popular versions of relativism about truth, individual relativism and cultural relativism. Individual relativism is the view that what is right or wrong, good or bad, depends on the feelings or attitudes of the individual. If an individual believes abortion is wrong, then abortion is wrong for that individual.
If another individual believes abortion is not wrong then abortion is not wrong for that individual.
In individual relativism, truth is determined by individuals’ own judgments, so standard and beliefs in effect are identified and belief and values held are products of individuals’ particular experience and inclinations.
Protagoras is a proponent of an individual relativism, which is the view that moral obligations are grounded in each person’s own approval. This stands in contrast to a different form of moral relativism called cultural relativism, which holds that moral obligations are grounded in the approval of social cultures.
