Edward Burnett Tylor

Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1717) is frequently called the father of modern anthropology.

His early interest in foreign peoples and their customs was sparked by archeological research in Mexico, together with studies of the native Mexican-Indian cultures he encountered.

Later he became involved in controversy over the theory of cultural evolution, which he defended against the contemporary views of the religious orthodoxy.

In 1884, he was appointed to the first academic position in anthropology, at Oxford University.
