Democracy is a political of government in whoosh governing power is derived from the people, by consensus (consensus democracy), by direct referendum (direct democracy), or by means of elected representatives of the people (representative democracy).
The word democracy comes from the Greek demos means ‘people,’ and ocracy means ‘government’ or ‘rule’. Hence, democracy means ‘people’s rule’.
The ancient Greeks were afraid of democracy, which they viewed as rule by rank and file citizens.
Aristotle saw democracy as government by the many poor who governed in their own class interest and favored freedom and equality.
Even though there is no specific, universally accepted definition of democracy, equality and freedom have been identified as important characteristic of democracy since ancient times.
There are two major schools of thought about democracy:
*The first believes that democracy is a form of government and it emphasizes the procedures that enable the people to govern
*The second is about the government policies, in freedom of religion and providing for human needs.
